Beyond The Quotidian at The Seligmann Center will be exhibiting the work of Kurt Seligmann in addition to collaborative works produced on the estate with Marcel Duchamp and Andre Breton. The exhibition will be presented in Seligmann’s former studio turned gallery, with an adjoining presentation of Seligmann’s prints to be featured in our lower gallery.

A memorial installation depicting Marcel Duchamps ‘inauguration of the First Papers of Surrealism’ will be exhibited. The installation showcases 5 bullet holes Marcel Duchamp famously fired into the foundation of Seligmann’s barn, marking the conception of The First Papers of Surrealism. The riffle which Duchamp uses to fire his famous shots, eventually will be same gun to kill Seligmann nearly 20 years later. Enjoy this outdoor installation set to the backdrop of Marcel Duchamp’s reading of ‘The Creative Act’ 1957.

Vision Hudson Valley and The Seligmann Center cordially invite guests to immerse themselves in the historic grounds of the Seligmann Center throughout Upstate Art Weekend. We encourage guests to picnic on our elegantly maintained property, and explore the grounds which feature, various permanent outdoor sculptures, a walking trail, and the Cemetery where Kurt is buried next to his wife Arlette.

Presented in the lower gallery, Arcane 17 takes its name and inspiration from the 1944 book 'Arcanum 17' written by Andre Breton with the help of Kurt Seligmann.

While in exile from Europe during the final stages of WW2, the text was written on a trip to the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec Canada. Inspired by the impermanence of Percé Rock juxtaposed with the global backdrop of WW2, Arcanum 17 conceives a spiritual revolution and resurrection of the society through woman and metaphysical conceptions of femininity. In the spirit of this monumental text, Arcane 17 at the Seligmann Center will exhibit a presentation of Seligmann's prints featured alongside a selection of three contemporary woman artists, Chellis Baird, Nazli Efe, and Ophelia Arc.
